Taking Herbal Teas While Pregnant

Are herbal teas safe to drink while I am pregnant. I have heard mixed reviews, that tends to make me think that they are not.

There are thousands of medicinal herbs in usage by humans and it is a safe bet that many are not safe to take while pregnant. Some could harm the unborn child or cause premature labour – just a few of the potential problems that could result from indiscriminant ingestion of herbs in tea form.

Having made that point, it is also true that there are herbs that are very beneficial to take by pregant women. For example raspberry leaf tea for morning sickness.

It is important to seek advice from a competent midwife or herbalist on what to take during pregnancy. A good book to consult is "The Woman’s Bok of Healing Herbs" by Sari Harrar and Sara O’Donnell (available from Richters).
