How early can you start? I am 38 and I am very irregular with my periods. I have been spotting and my mom was also like this. I get the hot flashes real bad some times, I did go to a gynaecologist. I did get some black cohosh; the lady said it would help. Since I have been taking it I don’t seem to spot. What all is that herb good for?

Although it is not unheard of, it is unlikely that you would be going into menopause at 38 yrs old. I suspect the reason for your irregular cycles and spotting are due to a hormonal imbalance. The hot flashes are indicative of your body’s poor reaction to stress in your life that is causing a whole endocrine/hormonal imbalance. Although black cohosh is an excellent herb and is helpful for addressing hormonal imbalances, it is not addressing all the underlying issues - diet and blood sugar regulation, stress management and exercise and are all equally important. To understand this process further, please see the Q&A entitled "Hormonal imbalance, hypothyroid, night sweats, stress, blood sugar regulation" for more information. You might want to consider seeing a registered herbalist for more hormonal regulation options.
